Caregiver Support: Respite Care Options
Jenee Mendillo, Bayshore Health and Homemaker Services, Inc.
The challenges of caring for a loved one are part of daily life for many individuals. Caregiving can be a thankless and demanding job. Getting help is essential for the caregiver’s physical and mental health and may help the caregiver continue to be a positive force in the life of their loved one. The choice to care for a loved one in a home setting can be very beneficial to the person needing care. But the time will come when the caregiver finds themselves worn-out or even becoming ill from self-neglect. Caregiver Support is essential to allow caregivers time off to recharge and refresh.
Respite care provides short term breaks that relieve stress, restore energy, and regain balance in the life of the caregiver. You may be surprised at how many local respite services are available for caregiver support.
Reputable respite care options consist of adult day centers, residential programs and in-home respite services. The first step in choosing the appropriate type of respite care is to determine your need for refreshment as well as the needs of your loved one.
If your loved one is in need of social stimulation and could use a change of scenery you may find adult day care to be an excellent option. With this respite care option you can get away for few hours a week and recharge your batteries. Adult day care allows you to bring your loved one to a welcoming and safe environment where they can interact with others much like themselves. These centers offer planned activities and health supervision. Adult day centers operate during daytime hours and usually during week days.
Other helpful respite services are residential programs. If you are ever in the need to take a weekend away or take some time off for even longer. Many assisted living communities offer temporary respite care for varying lengths of time. Group homes, hospitals, nursing homes, and other specialized facilities provide emergency and planned overnight caregiver support services, allowing caretakers 24-hour relief. Although medical insurance generally does not cover overnight respite services, long term care policies and veterans programs may subsidize care.
For those who prefer to be cared for in their own home, Private home care is an excellent option. You can hire an agency to send you a qualified and experienced caregiver occasionally or on a regular basis. Services may last from a few hours, when needed, to overnight. Such services can be arranged through a private-duty home health agency. This popular respite care choice enables special-needs individuals to remain in their own environments, and can be a valuable respite option for caregivers supports.
Bayshore Health and Homemaker Services is located in Tampa Bay, Florida and is able to customize a plan of care for each client and family they serve. An experienced home health aide can provide compassionate respite care for your loved one. Bayshore’s skilled nurses can come to your home and provide a free consultation before a home health aide is ever sent to provide care. Consider which of these caregiver support options best meet your needs and the needs of your loved one.

The Caregiver you sent us is a great communicator and provides a great loving environment for my Grandparents.
Stacy Myers
I really value the fact I do not have to worry about my mom while she is in your care. I also really value the socialization she is getting from your caregivers.
Dean W.
Thank you so much for the caregivers you have provided for us. As you know, my husband had a very difficult post- operation period. I think that he has turned a corner now and is improving daily. The care that your staff provided made a huge difference. I should call them “angels” instead of nurses!
Janice M.
Without Bayshore and the care and companionship they provided, I fear that my client would have been institutionalized. Your caregivers enabled my client to live in her home and enjoy a greatly enhanced quality of life as she was provided with the proper nutrition, stimulation, and encouragement.
Elder Law Atty., Pinellas County

I want to thank the staff of Bayshore for the fine service provided to my father over the past four years while he was in his home and then a resident in an assisted living facility. Everyone was very responsive to my requests and always maintained the attitude of the customer being first.
Thank you for helping our family and most of all thank you for allowing your caregivers to by our strength.
Judy
I want to thank you for making it possible for my mother to live at her home. Your caregiver made sure my mother took her medication, got nourishment, and made sure she was safe and comfortable.
John V.
There is just no way that I can express my appreciation for what you have done for my Aunt over the years. With me being out of state, I cannot tell you what a Godsend you all have been and how you have cared for her and gave me such peace of mind. You have been her friend and family for so many years.
