Seniors in Tampa Bay can now receive one-on-one consultation on advance preparation for hurricanes and natural disasters. This service is especially beneficial for seniors living alone, who may not have a concrete plan in place in case of an emergency.
According to the Pinellas county emergency management department the threat of a hurricane causes increased stress and anxiety in seniors, especially for those that are unprepared for the storm. This stress can lead to more incidents of illness and accidents, particularly for those seniors with heart disease or respiratory troubles.
Bayshore Home Care recently began a Hurricane Readiness Service for seniors in Tampa Bay. This service is provided by the company’s Care Managers. The Care Manager will guide participants through a practical step by step process ensuring that their emergency plan is complete such as:
- Conduct a customized disaster needs assessment based on physical & medical needs
- Register the senior at the nearest emergency shelter and or special needs shelter
- Facilitate the purchase of emergency supplies and non-perishable food & water
Having this plan in place gives peace of mind both to the elderly individual and their family, whether they are local or living across the country. Suzanne Johnson, Administrator for Bayshore Home Care urges, “I hope all seniors take advantage of this service. It is very dangerous for anyone to be alone and without a plan in case of a natural disaster like a hurricane. Although it isn’t fun to think about, having a plan in place saves lives.” This service is offered to residents of Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties for a nominal fee.
