Partnering with the Community, To Enrich the Lives of Veterans

Last week our Admissions Nursing Supervisor, Sharon Z. Lena, RN participated in the 12th Honor Flight of West Central Florida (HFWCF). HFWCF was established in late 2010 as an official Regional Hub of the National Honor Flight Network. As part of the Network, HFWCF provides all expense paid flights for World War II Veterans in the Tampa Bay area to visit their memorial in Washington, D.C. In 2011, the inaugural year, with significant support from corporate sponsors and individual donors, four missions were completed taking 241 WWII Veterans to Washington D.C. In 2012, four additional missions were completed. The 11th mission was just completed in June 2013! To date HFWCF has flown 782 WWII Veterans to D.C. Each one of these Veterans is accompanied by a Guardian Angel. Sharon was one of these Angels. She was responsible for providing one on one assistance for her Veteran (Leonard) throughout the long day’s exciting activities.

Sharon remarked that the day “was a huge learning experience and [she] benefited from the day as much as the Veterans.” Leonard commented that he was grateful to have Sharon by his side on that special day. Sharon and Leonard look forward to continuing their friendship, building on the moving experience they shared. Bayshore Home Care is honored to have Sharon involved in this program and thanks the HFWCF for this opportunity as well America’s Veterans for their service to our nation.
